The Club organised 3 tournaments -
1. A Closed SQ tournament (for Club members only)
2. A Handicap SQ tournament
3. A Handicap Racketball tournament
All 3 Finals were played on Saturday 28 March 2009
This year we had more entries than in the previous 4 years; 8 in the Racketball competition,
25 in the Squash Handicap competition, and 19 in the Squash Closed competition.
Thanks to everyone who took part, and I hope you all enjoyed your matches.
Racketball Handicap
Steve Wilshere beat Maggie Rigby 3-1
Maggie started on +4, and Steve on -12.
Maggie ran and ran, and played some great strokes despite being put under intense pressure by Steve's superior power.
Steve won the first 2 games 15-13 and 15-13, but then Maggie battled to win the third 15-14 after 3 game points.
Unfortunately Maggie began to tire in the fourth game, and Steve eventually won that 15-12.
Squash Handicap
Mark Maclure beat Laurie Spragg 3-0.
Mark started on 0 and Laurie on -4.
Mark overpowered Laurie winning 15-7, 15-10, 15-10.
Laurie found it difficult to get the ball past Mark, who volleyed almost every ball low and hard.
Mark was very sharp and accurate, and kept the pressure on Laurie for the entire match.
Squash Closed
Ed Mallam beat Steve Wilshere 3-1.
Steve put up a dogged fight in the first game, but Ed played some lovely squash to win 9-4.
In the second game Ed capitalized on a few errors that Steve started to make, and Ed won that game fairly comfortably 9-0.
I think that scoreline motivated Steve for the third game, because he came out all guns blazing.
Both players showed great determination and stamina, and played some excellent controlled squash,
but Steve was not to be denied, eventually winning 9-4.
Unfortunately the effort in winning the third game, and his previous exertions in the Racketball final,
took it's toll on Steve, and Ed managed to exert more and more control on the rallies to win the fourth game 9-1, and the match.
Excellent squash.
