We arrange several tournaments throughout the year, some serious, some just for fun.
Fun Racketball Competition 4th December 2010
Beginners and established players joined forces on Saturday 4th December to take part in a fun Racketball tournament at the Swan Pool courts.
In all 12 players entered the competition which was played as a team event with handicaps applied to favour the less experienced players.
In the true spirit of this hugely enjoyable game, the result was not as important as everyone having a good time,
however we did have prizes for the players that contributed the most points to their team’s total.
The winners were both beginners, and the photo below on the right shows Jill Reynolds shaking hands with
Kevin Tobin from Fringford whilst Robbie Mason of Tingewick waits to be presented with his prize. The photo on the left shows all the participants.
Racketball provides a great cardio workout and it’s a great social sport.
There are players of all standards at the club and our Racketball section is growing, which allows newcomers to find people to play against.
2009/2010 Squash Tournaments
The Club organised a Closed and a Handicap tournament
Both Finals were played on Saturday 17th April 2010
This year we had more entries than in the previous 5 years; 26 in both competitions.
Thanks to everyone who took part, and we hope you all enjoyed your matches.
Squash Closed
Andy Cummings beat Ed Mallam 3-1.
Ed surprised Andy in the first game continually retrieving the ball and keeping it tight to the wall.
Andy seemed to get a little frustrated from time to time and put several shots in the tin. Ed finally won 9-5.
In the second game Andy started to play a more measured game, controlling his shots better and put Ed under increasing pressure.
There was very little between the two players at the start of the second game,
both attacking when they could and defending when they had to.
Andy gradually drew ahead by dragging Ed all around the court; first to the front of the court, and then to the back.
Andy eventually won 9-3.
In the third game it soon became clear that Ed was beginning to tire,
but when he got the chance he was still able to play some great shots to put Andy under pressure.
However Andy's dominance gradually increased, and the more points he won, the more Andy relaxed and the more fluent were his shots.
Andy won the third game 9-1.
Two games to one up and Andy's confidence was high. The fourth game was a repeat of the previous game;
Andy was able to play a lot of his shots with plenty of time, and Ed was struggling to retrieve.
Andy won the fourth game 9-1, and the match 3-1.
Great squash.
Squash Handicap
Simon Tattersfield beat Steve Wilshere 3-0.
Simon started on 0 and Steve on -6 points.
A fascinating match to watch, and with American scoring, not that easy to keep up with the score.
Right from the start Simon was extremely sharp, anticipating Steve's shots, and getting to the ball very early.
I think Steve was surprised just how quick Simon was around the court.
Steve managed to win the first few rallies, and reduced his points deficit to only 2 behind.
But Simon gradually picked up the pace of the game, anticipating Steve's shots, and getting to the ball very early.
The points deficit soon went back up to 6 in Simon's favour, and he won the first game 15-8.
In the second game Simon continued to race around the court getting to most of Steve's shots early enough to be able to play an attacking shot.
Simon was extremely sharp, but the spectators wondered how long he could keep up his relentless pace.
Simon cruised to a 15-3 victory.
The third game saw Simon continue where he left off in the previous game, and he was soon 10 points ahead.
But then he seemed to hit "the wall" and stopped running, and Steve quickly won 10 points in a row to level at 6-6.
Simon won a rally, but then Steve won another 6 points in quick succession to lead 12-7, and seemed to be on course to win the game and maybe the match.
How wrong we were, because suddenly Simon got his second wind and raced through the next few rallies to win 15-13, and the match 3-0.
